With the Lakers decisive win over the Magic, Phil Jackson surpassed legendary Celtic’s coach Red Auerbach by winning his 10th NBA championship as an NBA coach. The win over the Magic was his 4th championship as the Laker’s coach and he won 6 championships with the Chicago Bulls. He is the only coach to have won 10 championships in any major U.S. professional sport.
Nicknamed the “Zen Master,” Jackson has always done coaching his way. Influenced by Robert Pirsig’s book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Native American spiritual practices, Jackson’s approach is unconventional. However, no one can argue with the results.
A reserve on the New York Knicks team that won the title in 1973, Jackson took many of the key learnings from that team’s experience and applied it to the teams he coached. The son of ministers, Jackson attended high school in Williston, North Dakota. He led his team to 2 state titles in basketball, played football and pitched for the baseball team.
Basketball fans, and especially Laker fans, are waiting to see if Jackson will come back in an attempt to win his 11th NBA title next year.
