Soldier surprises daughter with early homecoming

Air Force Master Sergeant Joseph Myers was hoping to have the opportunity to see his daughter while she was still in 4th grade. On the next-to-last day of school, he was reunited with Hannah after spending 350 days away from home in Iraq.

As you can see in the video, 10-year-old Hannah was caught completely off guard by the surprise. Hannah, and her classmates, were told that they had some special guests who would be speaking and taking some pictures. Hannah’s mom and dad came in, along with several reporters. Dad couldn’t put into words how much he missed his daughter. Based on Hannah’s facial expressions, the feeling was mutual.

Christian the Lion (1969)

An orphaned lion cub is purchased in London from Harrods department store and raised in the city. Eating at fine restaurants, playing soccer, traveling in a Bentley and spending weekend days in a nice furniture shop. No, this isn’t a children’s book plot. It actually happened. As the lion grew — Christian weighed only 35 pounds when purchased — the owners realized a more appropriate living space was needed.

It was rehabilitated by George Adamson and released in Kenya. In this heartwarming video, watch how Christian the Lion is reunited with his keepers, John Rendall and Anthony Bourke.

Feel good photo of the year: Squirrel crashes photo session

Melissa and Jackson Brandts hoped to get a photo of themselves near beautiful Lake Minnewanka in Alberta’s Banff National Park. Using a tripod and a self-timer, everything was in place. A ground squirrel, perhaps intrigued by the sound of the camera focusing, decided to crash the photo party. This photo was one of the results.

Mississauga Mayor has won 11 straight elections

The 6th largest city in Canada, Mississauga, is run by 88-year-old, Hazel McCallion. Last election, she got 92% of the vote. A former professional hockey player, she still keeps her skates in the car for puck drops at hockey games. Nicknamed “Hurricane Hazel,” she shows no signs of slowing down.

The Power of Play

In parts of Africa, it’s not uncommon for girls and women to spend as much as three hours a day fetching water. Over 50 percent of Africans in rural areas don’t have access to clean water. In schools, it is usually girls who are sent to fetch water, taking time away from their studies and playtime.

Making clean water available closer to homes and schools significantly increases the time that mothers have available to care for their children and girls have to attend school. It also reduces childhood illness.

To help address this problem, a series of merry-go-rounds, powered by kids playing, brings much-needed water to many parts of Africa. Each spin of the merry-go-round, help powers a pump to bring up clean water. Five minutes of play can result in a gallon of water ready for use.

PlayPump® Water System is working with governments, foundations and companies to bring clean water to up to millions of people over the next several years.

The National Spelling Bee

Round one of the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee begins May 26 with a written test. The purpose of the Bee is “to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.” The finals, where contestants compete on stage, are May 28, 2009.
