In her senior year at Eagan High School, Mallory Weggemann had severe back pain. It was determined that she would receive a series of epidural shots to ease the pain. After walking into the clinic for one of these shots, she was never able to walk out. Paralyzed from the waist down, Weggemann was faced with the challenge of using a wheelchair on a permanent basis.

A high school swimmer, she was inspired to get back into the pool after watching the Olympic trials. Per Jacob Kittilstad’s article in Swimming World Magazine,

“When I got into that pool I was in tears because I couldn’t do anything,” Weggemann said. “Before, I was swimming laps and diving off the blocks but then I couldn’t even stand in the water. My knees just collapsed from under me.”

Perhaps more focused than ever, Weggemann threw herself into her swimming training. Her hard work payed off as recently she set an Paralmpic American record in the 100m fly.
