Former University of St. Thomas Soccer Coach Colleen Carey was twice selected as MIAC Coach of the Year recognizing her team’s impressive winning records and achievements. As she highlights in the introduction of her new book, Well Prepared Coach Youth Soccer Practice Plans ($29.95, ebook), things weren’t always that easy for her coaching.
“I remember starting out as a youth coach and thinking what a major difference I was going to make in these young players’ lives,” said Carey, “Then reality set in and the amount of time it took to put one practice plan together was overwhelming. I had a full time job and after a few practices, I just showed up hoping we would have a productive session. Needless to say, I failed my team and our season was tough.”
With an important lesson learned, Carey said, “I spent the next year putting together practice plans. This book is a result of putting together practice plans for the last 18 years.”
Her book was written for coaches of U8, U10 and U12 boys and girls teams. The drills focus on age-appropriate and field tested fundamentals that engage young soccer players. With step-by-step directions on how to run 20 practices, youth soccer coaches can be ready for practices in minutes with proven practice plans. With a written plan in hand, or on their smart phones, coaches can focus on the task at hand without having to worry about what to do next.
Currently, Carey is responsible for player and coach development for some 650 players and 45 coaches as Director of Coaching for the Eagan Wave Soccer Club. A Como Park, MN resident, she is on the Player Development Committee for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association and has coached with the Minnesota State Olympic Development Program for the past 8 years. As a high school soccer star, she led the Anoka Tornadoes to victory in the 1990 Minnesota High School Prep Soccer Championship. She played college soccer and basketball at the College of St. Benedict and was a three-time All-Conference selection in both sports.
In addition to describing the activity, listing coaching points and progressive ways to increase the difficulty level of many activities, Carey is a big believer in showing diagrams to help coaches quickly understand the set-up and activity. Her book includes over 90 diagrams.
Carey’s book is sure to make many a soccer coach’s job easier as they’ll be ready for each practice in minutes. As Carey learned early in her coaching career, coming to practices with a plan can make all the difference!
