Beer Names

Many beer names have worked their way into pop culture. Most readers of a certain age will remember such classics as Budweiser, Schlitz, Stroh’s, Rolling Rock, and Old Style.

In terms of popularity, the top three beverages worldwide are water, tea, and beer, in that order. The world loves beer. Beer companies go to great lengths to find the right recipe and make the best-tasting beer. The names of their breweries and the names of their beers are also well thought out and important.

Here is a list of real and fictional beers from around the world.

Types of Beer

Here are one dozen types of beer that every beer drinker should know about.

  • Lager – For years, almost all of American beers were lagers. Budweiser is a Lager. Lagers are light and refreshing and perfect for summer. These beers pair well with any kind of food and are refreshing on a hot sunny day.
  • Pilsner – A little more flavorful than a lager, Pilsners can trace their origin to the Czech town of Pilsen (Plzen in Czech). The beer is gold in color and has a little more hop taste and spice than a Lager. These beers work well with chicken or fish.
  • Amber Ale – These beers are perfect for someone looking for a little more body and citrus flavor. The use of roasted malts gives the beer its amber color. Having more flavor and body, Amber Ales goes well with barbeques and grilled meats and veggies.
  • American Pale Ale – This is the classic American craft brew. It is golden or amber in color and generally non-filtered. It has a crisp hoppy taste and pairs well with all foods. Its distinct taste is created by using a combination of hops.
  • India Pale Ale – These beers tend to be slightly darker in color than other pale ales. They have a stronger hops taste and aroma. Their hearty flavor makes them ideal to serve with meat, cheese, pasta, and chili.

More Styles

  • English Pale Ale – Beers like Boddington or Fullers are English Pale Ales. Similar to American and India Pale Ales, but slightly milder with a little more malt flavor. Bitters are a sub-set of these beers.
  • American Brown Ale – Not as heavy as a Porter or a Stout, an American Brown is unique. With a malt-forward taste, Brown Ales can be a little bitter. This full-bodied beer pairs well with barbequed and grilled foods.
  • Wheat Beer – Popular in Germany and Belgium, WitBiers often have a citrus flavor and some use spices like Coriander or Cardamom. They are bright gold and can be paired with many different foods from fruit to fish.
  • Stout – Stouts are the darkest of the beer family. There are dry stouts like Guinness and other Stouts that incorporate lactose (Milk Stouts) or oatmeal (Oatmeal Stouts). They have complex and hearty flavors that work well with flavorful meals like roasts, stews, or even sipping with dessert.
  • Porter – A very dark brown beer like a Stout with more hop and less malt flavor than a Stout. The subtle changes in ingredients distinguish Porters from their Stout cousins. The beer has hints of chocolate and caramel. It pairs well with Prime Rib, Pork Roast, and of course, Chocolate.
  • Sour Beer – These beers have recently risen in popularity. As their name suggests, they are sour with tart overtones. Sometimes, fruit, spices, and other flavors are added to the wort. Their intriguing taste works well with a charcuterie board.
  • Belgian Dubbel and Tripel – These beers have low bitterness and often have some caramel and toffee tones. They come in a range of colors from light gold to medium brown. Some have a fruity taste and hints of spices. Dubbels and Tripels pair well with sausage and cheese.

Cocktails Made with Beer

Beer can be substituted or augment hard liquor in cocktails. Here are some recipes for beer cocktails.

Shandy – This is a popular summer drink and easy to make. 1 12 oz. bottle of lager-style beer combined with ½ cup lemonade. Serve with a slice of lemon, ice optional.

Beer Margarita – This one has tequila in it, but the beer takes some of the edges off. 1 12 oz. can of Frozen Limeade, 12 oz. of Tequila, 12 oz. water, and 1 12 oz. Lager-style beer. This can be blended and served in a salt-rimmed glass or just over ice.

Michelada – The Spanish words Mi Chela Helada translates to My Cold Beer. As a replacement for a Bloody Mary, this tasty drink is usually made with Dos Equis. 1 Lime Juiced, 1 Teaspoon Chili Lime Seasoning (Like Tajin) more to taste, ½ cup tomato juice cocktail (such as Clamato or V-8), 1 Teaspoon Hot Pepper Sauce, 1 Teaspoon Worchester Sauce, 1 Teaspoon Soy Sauce, ¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (optional), 1 12 oz. beer (such as Dos Equis). Mix and serve over ice in a Tajin-rimmed beer glass.

Beer Lunch Box Cocktail – A twist on an old classic. 1 oz. Montenegro Amaro Liqueur, 1 oz. freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, 5 ounces chilled lager style beer. Mix and serve over ice in an Old-Fashioned glass.

Fall Apple Pumpkin Shandy – A delicious drink for Autumn. 6 oz. Pumpkin Ale, 4 oz. Apple Cider. Mix and serve without ice and with an apple slice. If you do not have Pumpkin Ale, you may use 6 oz. lager style beer with 1 Teaspoon pumpkin spice.

Final Fun Fact About Beer

Since 2002 Boston Brewing Company, the brewery that makes Sam Adams beer, creates a beer called Utopia. Utopias are barrel-aged beers made in minimal quantities. They are bottled in uniquely designed containers that resemble brewing kettles. You can find them on eBay for $50.00 to $250.00. The barrel aging process allows the beer to increase in alcohol content. The ABV (Alcohol By Volume) can be as high as 28%, almost 60 proof.

By Dr. Keg Tim Moodie

Tim Moodie is a beer aficionado. His nickname in college was Dr. Keg, not for the reason you might think. He had the ability to fix any kind of keg-tapping device. For his 40th Birthday, his wife ordered some beer from Steven’s Point Brewery in Steven’s Point, WI. The beer had custom labels that said Dr. Keg’s Private Stock on them.

You can still order Stevens Point Beer with custom labels. Here is a link to their website. A six-pack is $10.99, and a case is $35.00. www.pointbeer.com/products/custom-label
