The Story Behind Coffee and Coffee Shops
Most historians trace coffee to Ethiopia starting in the 14th or 15th century. Traders brought coffee beans to Europe and coffee is referenced throughout the continent in the 17th century. To cash in on coffee’s popularity, Coffee House began showing up in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, and more large European Cities.
Along with Tea, Coffee was sent to the Colonies from England. Starbucks and Caribou followed not too long after.

The History of New Orleans’s Unique Coffee
Since New Orleans has French ties and was once ruled by France, it is not surprising that some elements of French culture landed there. An example is Chicory Coffee. Chicory is a blue flowering curly green-leafed plant. The roots are dried and ground and added to ground coffee beans for a unique flavor.
Chicory Coffee usually shows up whenever there is an economic downturn because it is cheap. Its different taste isn’t everyone’s “cup of tea, er, uh, Coffee.” One of New Orleans’s oldest coffee shops, Café Du Monde, has served Chicory Coffee since the 1800s. It is offered in their open-air market with beignets. Beignets are airy pastries sprinkled with powdered sugar. Chicory is also known as Curly Endive, and you can use the leaves in your salads.
Final Fun Fact
It is true about Americans and coffee. They just can’t live without it. In fact, in 2020, every Adult in the United States consumed an average of 1.87 cups a day. That is almost two per day, and some people don’t drink coffee. That means some of us are doing more than our part.
By Tim Moodie
Tim Moodie has been known to drink coffee. But his real coffee connection is that he was hired to write funny coffee mugs for Recycled Paper Products. One year he had their bestselling mug. It read, Merry Christmas and Happy New York! It featured an illustration of King Kong climbing the Empire State Building wearing a Santa Suit.
