Cowboys and cowgirls have unique and image-evoking names that we remember. Cowboy names are cool, whether it was a comic character like Howdy Doody or a strong lawman like Marshall Dillon.
They make us think about simpler times and the great black-and-white movies of the ’50s and ’60s. A cowboy like Roy Rogers singing a western song makes you smile.

Judge Roy Bean: The Law
Judge Roy Bean was a saloonkeeper and gambler appointed a justice of the peace by the State of Texas. Bean had difficulty reading by all accounts, and he made up for what he lacked in legal training with his audaciousness. He would routinely pause a trail to sell liquor to the lawyers, the defendant(s), and onlookers. Any fines that were levied were paid directly to the Judge who kept the money.
Judge Roy Bean billed himself as “The Law West of the Pecos. He was the only judge for miles, and his law was swift if inconsistent. In one case, an Irish railroad worker killed a Chinese railroad laborer. Two hundred Irish workers showed up to support their friend. The good Judge surveyed the crowd, picked up one of his law books, thumbed through it, and made a declaration. “homicide is a crime, but I can find nothing that says you can’t kill a Chinaman.”

Vigilante Justice
Vigilante justice was common in the Wild West. If citizens felt the long arm of the law was moving too slowly, they took matters into their own hands. In a ruthless example, Montana ranchers lynched 35 rustlers and horse thieves. Some historians say that vigilante groups were responsible for dispatching over 700 ne’er do wells.
By Tombstone Tim Moodie
Tim Moodie has never been a cowboy. As a matter of fact, he is scared of horses. In college, he and his friends toured a horse stud farm. He still has psychological scars to this day. But, he has worked professionally naming products, brands, and companies.
