Names of Famous Bunnies
Here are some famous bunnies and rabbits that you might just recognize.
- Thumper – First introduced in 1942, Thumper was a key supporting player in the movie Bambi. Thumper also starred in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Lion King 1 ½.”
- Roger Rabbit – As mentioned above, Roger Rabbit starred in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” in 1988. In the movie, Roger lives in Toontown and is framed for the murder of the town’s owner.
- The Easter Bunny – Probably the most famous bunny in the world, the Easter Bunny dates back to the 1700s. German Lutherans adopted the concept of the Easter Hare as a symbol of fertility and rebirth. They brought the tradition with them when they immigrated to the United States.
- Harvey – Making his debut in the 1950 comedy film “Harvey,” the rabbit was six feet three and a half inches tall. Only one person, Elwood P. Dowd (played by Jimmy Stewart), can see Harvey. Stewart was nominated for an Academy Award.
- Bugs Bunny – Rabbits don’t get much more famous than Bugs Bunny. He started in cartoons in 1938 and has appeared in more cartoons than any other cartoon character. His catchphrase “What’s up doc?” was a common saying in Texas, where cartoon director Tex Avery was born.

- Mr. Bunny Rabbit – Was a fixture on the Captain Kangaroo television show. He wore horned-rimmed glasses and was always trying to trick the captain into giving him more carrots.
- Rabbit – With just the name Rabbit, this friend of Winnie the Pooh, appeared in the book “House at Pooh Corner” in 1926. He lives with Pooh’s other friends in the Hundred Acre Woods.
- Bucky O’Hare – A space hero in a series of comic books introduced in 1991, Bucky O’Hare was captain of a spaceship. He and his friends fight the evil Toad empire. The comic books spawned a TV Series and Toy Line.
- Energizer Bunny – Since 1988, the Energizer Bunny has been the mascot of Energizer batteries. A pink mechanized rabbit that plays bass drum, the bunny wears sunglasses and definitely has an attitude.
- Trix Rabbit – Starting in 1959, the Trix Rabbit has been the “spokes-bunny” for Trix Cereal. For a little while, the Trix Rabbit talked. He was voiced by Mel Blanc, the same voice actor that supplied the voice for Bugs Bunny.

The technical term for a female rabbit is a “doe.” A male rabbit is known as a “buck.”
Cottontail rabbits are also known as Sylvilagus. There are 17 distinct breeds in North and South America. As of 2020, the American Rabbit Breeder’s Association recognizes 49 different rabbit breeds worldwide. The Flemish Giant rabbit can grow to two and a half feet, and they average 15 pounds. The Netherland Dwarf rabbit can weigh as little as one pound and one ounce and is six inches long.
Unique breeds include the Lionhead rabbit, Holland Lop, Blanc de Hotot, Silver Fox, Rhinelander rabbit, Pointed Beveren, and the English Angora rabbit.
