Looking for some fun guinea pig names?
We all remember, as kids, the aquarium in the corner of the Science classroom that held a guinea pig. Children would squeal with delight when they could feed it some lettuce or even hold it. The cute furry creatures resembled baby pigs, and their faces were adorable. Because of this, many children ran home to their parents and demanded they buy a guinea pig as soon as possible.
Hence the need to find names for their new family pets. At first, guinea pigs can be very nervous and excitable. But the more you can calmly and tenderly handle them, the more they will reciprocate. The average lifespan for a guinea pig is five to seven years. Guinea pigs are very social animals, and because of this, they like to have a guinea pig companion (read more names). Where do Guinea Pigs Come From?
Guinea pigs are not pigs. Technically, they are cavies. They belong to a family of rodents that include guinea pigs, wild cavies, and capybara. These animals come from the Andean region of South America. The name guinea pig is a perplexing mystery since they are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. The first reference to the rodent was in the 1700s, and it was spelled “ginny pig.”
Guinea Pig = Test Subject
Although no longer in use today, guinea pigs were widely utilized for science experiments beginning in the 1700s. Because of this, the term “guinea pig” became synonymous with someone who was being used as a “test subject.”
They’re not Pigs at All
These lovable pets are rodents. The name may have been derived from the fact that guinea pigs make a squealing sound not dissimilar to pigs.
By Tim Moodie
Tim Moodie has worked developing company, product, and brand names for small and big companies for many years. He seldom makes squealing sounds.
