Come August every year, the best 11 – 13 year old’s on baseball teams from around the world gather in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to determine who is the best at the Little League World Series (LLWS). With ESPN broadcasting many of the games, excitement builds with each game. This year’s series was very special indeed! Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West team won the U.S. Series and lost to World Champ South Korea in the final.

The story of the series was Mo’ne Davis.  Mo’ne, the 18th girl to make it to the tournament, pitched with poise and skill as she led her Taney team from Philadelphia far into the tournament brackets. Her performances were must see TV and she quickly became a media sensation. Newscasts, morning talk shows and Sports Illustrated featured her prominently in their coverage.

But, Mo’ne wasn’t the only story.  Here are:

#5 – Sportsmanship.  Watch Jackie Robinson West’s Trey Hondras apologize to Rhode Island coach Dave Belisle for excessive celebration after hitting a home run.  Belisle lets him know everything is ok. Sportsmanship is a big part of the Little League World Series. Hondras’ apology and Belisle’s reaction exemplify that. Little League WS 2014.


#4 – Girl Power – Toms River’s Kayla Roncin and Mo’ne Davis are showing the boys, and everyone else, a thing or two about how to play baseball. The coverage  received might inspire a new generation of female baseball players. Little League WS 2014.

#3 – Inner city teams are back – Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West and Philadelphia’s Taney made their marks. Little League WS 2014.

#2 – Coaching with style. Here’s a must see: Coach David Belisle’s end of season speech to his Rhode Island Cumberland American LL team after a difficult 7-8 loss to Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West. After watching this speech, I’m guessing just about every sports parent wished that their kids played for Coach Belisle.  Well done, Coach! Little League WS 2014.
