National Football League (NFL)

October 3, 2024

The National Football League (NFL) has been ingrained in American culture for decades. The NFL continues to make efforts to grow its sport and brand in other countries, so people need to be aware of it.

What is the NFL?

The National Football League (NFL) is the world’s largest American Football organization. The NFL operates with all 32 teams throughout the United States.

Key Takeaways:

  • The NFL’s roots date back more than a century. The league’s first president is regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
  • The NFL is the largest sports league in the world and has dominated American culture for more than half a century.
  • The season starts with the preseason at the end of July and concludes with the Super Bowl on the first Sunday of February.
  • Players can enter the NFL through the draft or as undrafted free agents.

History of the NFL

The NFL started in Canton, Ohio, in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The league’s president, Jim Thorpe, played for the Canton Bulldogs in the inaugural season and was previously an Olympic gold medalist.

In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the NFL, a name that has held for nearly a century. After competition from the AFL, the two leagues agreed to merge and keep the NFL title. Of the 14 original APFA teams, only two remain: the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears).

Is the NFL still around today?

The NFL remains strong today. It is the most profitable sports league in the world, generating nearly $14 million in 2019. The NFL also hosts the Super Bowl, annually the most-watched television program in the U.S.

When did the NFL become popular in the U.S.?

Major League Baseball was the most popular sports league in the United States for decades. Since the mid-1960s, however, the MLB has taken a backseat to the NFL. While MLB’s trend was downwards, the NFL remained the top league in the U.S. and has not relinquished that title since. The NFL’s peak came in 2006-2007 when 43% of U.S. adults said the NFL was their favorite sport to watch. The NFL has declined in recent years, but it remains the most popular sport in America, with 37% of U.S. adults naming it their favorite.

How does the NFL work?

The NFL currently has 32 teams from across the United States. The league is split into two conferences, the NFC and the AFC. Both conferences are broken into four divisions from each conference. Each team may have no more than 55 players on a roster, with 45 players listed as active.

When is the NFL season?

Every team plays a regular-season schedule of 16 games between September and January. For the 2021-2022 season, the NFL will play 17 games. Seven teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs, which culminate in the Super Bowl on the first Sunday in February. Teams typically begin their preseason training camps in mid- to late-July, with two or three preseason games preceding the regular season.

Who is #1 in the NFL?

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots are historically the most successful teams in the NFL, with six Super Bowl wins each. Recently, the Kansas City Chiefs have gained a reputation as one of the top teams in the NFL. After losing the 2018 AFC Championship to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, the Chiefs bounced back to win Super Bowl LIV the following year. The Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl for a second straight season in 2021 and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

How do players make it to the NFL?

Like other sports, very few football players make it to the NFL. In cases where players feel like they do have a shot at making it into the NFL, they can declare for the annual NFL draft if they are eligible or at least three years out of high school or apply for approval from the NFL’s player personnel staff.

Once the player is selected in the draft, they are eligible to be drafted by any of the 32 NFL teams and later sign a contract, although that doesn’t always happen. If players aren’t drafted, they still have the opportunity to sign with teams as undrafted free agents. Overall, only the best of the best make it into the NFL.
